HTTP User Agent detection - php

I'm in the middle of a research. I'm using Bootstrap for building a responsive website but the loading speed is actual quite slow. There is a lot of stuff I use for desktop which is not needed for mobile or tablet. I came across scrips like this: http://mobiledetect.net/ and was questioning the worth to install and use it. Do you have any experience using this kind of scripts and important question does it work like it says it works?
Can you tell me more about the advantages and disadvantages of using this kind of scripts?

in php it is easy to detect the device it works 99% of the time

i use this way to check and use it because my layout for mobile is a lot different then on computer. The advantage is you can make the site look better on mobile and computer. The disadvantage is you have to do double work lol.If you want to add more devices then you can echo the $info variable and find the unique string from device and add another or condition

How to detect between mobile & tablets in PHP

I read on this thread:

on how to know if the browser is a mobile device. the general code is this:

The problem is that I want to treat tablets (iPad & xoom).
I saw there that there is a isIpad() function that I have tested yet - but that still doesn't solve the difference between tablets and mobile phones.

The only way to do this is with a huge lookup table of User-Agent: strings.
get_browser() would probably be able to do what you want, but you would need to make sure that you keep the browscap file very up to date - new tablet models are being released on a weekly basis.
Alternatively there may some Javascript way to do it (although I don't know what that might be) but
you would still have to keep a very large lookup table updated
you should never rely on Javascript for any kind of functionality.

Check the $_SERVER['HTTP_USER_AGENT'] for mobile user agents.
You should check out http://detectmobilebrowser.com/ for already existing scripts to detect for mobile browsers (it just uses the user agents).
You can try The WURFL PHP API or Tera-Wurfl
http://mobiledetect.net/ is another lightweight php class, but you mist keep in mind that checking User-agent is a good but not perfect way, the issue is rules are constantly out-dated and incomplete so you need to change the detection code continuously.

Nowadays, what do you consider "a mobile device"?
User agent parsers will give very good results, except for rare edge cases. The problem is that you have to constantly update them if you store the data locally or depend on the service being online if you use it "in the cloud".
It is better to use a functionality detection library, e.g. Modernizr, send to your server information about the browser capabilities on first visit and serve appropriate content based on what the browser can or cannot do. Or even better, delegate that to Javascript.
The desktop browser usually sends requests with the following header:
Sec-CH-UA-Mobile: ?0
The browser on the mobile device usually sends requests with the following header:
Sec-CH-UA-Mobile: ?1
So, you could check this using code like the following:

Simple Smart Phone detection

Ok I've seen a couple of mobile detection scripts that look to identify all mobile handsets, anyone come up with a simple Smart Phone detection script?
I'm using the jQueryMobile framework and wanted to theme based on device, Am I going about this the wrong way or are there any tips one could give?

I am not pretty sure if I understand what you are trying to achieve and with "wanted to theme based on device".
So, will you put a BlackBerry logo if the user has a BlackBerry device (so it should be dependent on the manufacturer) or will your web app be denpendent on the screen size? Or depenedent on the features of HTML5/CSS3?
Also in web development I try to do one website for all. The same I do with jQuery Mobile and it works great. I did one design, which works for Opera (Win), Firefox (Win + Mac), IE9, Safari (Win, Mac, iPad), Google Chrome (Win). And I do no CSS hacks!
Your web app should be nearly independent of the screen size, I only have css media limitations and some JavaScript functions which design the page.
If you want to check the HTML5 / CSS3 support of the webbrowser, you should never check the mobile device itself, you need to check the function itself.
So, bad style is checking if the webbrowser is IE in version 7, 8, 9, because you will never know which function will work in which version. You check the functionality you need. And this can be done with Modernizr:

Other checks, jQuery can handle it.
There are so many different mobile devices and so little standardization, and you probably would need to update your detection script from time to time as well as add new devices to the list. I found that www.handsetdetection.com has pretty complete list of handsets you can download. Also you can use their API for the real time detection on their side.
I don't know how it works on your app but I'd recommend to add detection info to your users' cookies in order to make api calls only for the unique devices.

How to get a site screenshot quickly using PHP?

I want to create a web directory site, and I need to get these site screenshots. How to get a site screenshot quickly using PHP?
I tried IECAPT,webscreencapture, khtml2png, but they are all slowly. And they all get screenshot one url by one url.
Is IECAPT depends on a ie browser? if it is, why it can not open many ie tags so that work at the same time?
Is there anyone can recommend me a PHP screenshots software using online? according to my above requirements? Thank you.
Your requirements are unrealistic. Your best bet is to integrate with WebKit through something like CutyCapt that doesn't run an actual browser, but just the WebKit rendering engine. You shouldn't have any concurrency issues, but it it isn't going to be fantastic.

Probably the easiest way is to use an external service. There used to be Alexa Site Thumbnail but it has been discontinued, so you must look for alternatives. For example http://www.pageglimpse.com/ seems to be one.

I do not think many thumbnail service site, like pageglimpse.com, they install many browsers on their web servers. What is the technology they use?

I'm using the Zend framework and the openid selector from http://code.google.com/p/openid-selector/ - however I find I can't login using sites like Google and Yahoo as they use direct identity based login system whereby one is just redirected to a url as opposed to entering a unique url of their own for authentication.
I've checked out many options and hacks but none of them seem to work. How can i get this to work here btw - how is it implemented at stack overflow? I could really use all the help here guys..

Well the issue here is that from what I have noticed is that the Zend OpenID class doesn't support OpenID 2.0 the thing is that a typical open ID providor gives you a unique url such as your-name.openid-providor.com or openid-providor.com/your-name and the Zend OpenId class just parses through that url and then redirects you to the providor website where upon authentication you are redirected back.
In the case of Yahoo and google - you don't enter a unique url instead you are redirected to the providors login site and upon login and authentication you are redirected back - so basically whats happeining is that the zend_openID object when it parses to tell who the providor is it fails to tell from the general url itself. Like when you click on teh Google link it redirects you to https://www.google.com/accounts/o8/id
Its more an issue with the zend openid object here and there isn't any help on zend related forums - so I was wondering if someone had already hacked or had an alteration I could make to the class to accomplish this. Sorry if I'm missing something but I'm kinda new to this and programming with open ID and have just started to get my feet wet.
Thanks for the follow up - I did check into RPX a while back and they do have a php class but I wasnt able to check it out plus I really just want to for now get the code selector used as on stackoverflow to work with Yahoo and Google authentication. There has to be some kind of way to tweak the parsing which the Zend OpenID class uses as it runs a series of regular expression checks to make a discovery.
Little late to the game but I was able to get this working with some hacks I found around the interwebs.
First. Yahoo. To get Yahoo working all I had to do was change the JavaScript to use me.yahoo.com instead of just yahoo.com and it worked perfectly with the version of the Zend Framework I'm using. Unfortunately Google still wasn't, so some hacking was in order.
All of these changes go in Zend/OpenId/Consumer.php
First, in the _discovery method add the following on the series of preg_match checks that starts at around line 740.

I added this right before the return false; statement that's in the else {} block.
Second, in the _checkId method you'll need to add 3 new blocks (I haven't dug around enough to know what causes each of these three cases to be called, so I covered all to be on the safe side.
Inside the $version <= 2.0 block, you'll find an if/else if/else block. In the first if statement ($this->_session !== null) add this to the end:

I need to use Google's OpenID stuff, and I tried Steven's code and couldn't get it to work as-is. I've made some modifications.
The _discovery change method is still the same:
Zend/OpenId/Consumer.php, line 765, add:

I believe that was the only change I had to make. I'm pretty sure there's supposed to be some checking involved with the above for security reasons, but I haven't looked far enough into it to see what they would be.
Going over all the advice provided - I've decided to ditch using the zend_openid class [ sorry about that zend ] and instead I've switched to using JanRains OpenID library. Its taken a few hours to get it up and running with my project but atleast its working like a breeze. Had to make a lot of hacking and a bit of code spill over to get it working but its worth it.
I couldn't use any of Zend adapters with Zend-Auth to settle this new code library in as the library did the authentication on its own. SO I hacked and made a generic adapter that just returned a filled zend_result set to the Auth object thus I authenticate using my library and merely store the result in the Auth object pulling a bit of a fast one one the Zend-Auth object rather than have to rewrite my code again.

I'm pretty sure that Yahoo only works with OpenID 2.0. If you want to support Yahoo users, you're going to have to upgrade to a library with 2.0 support. That's going to be a matter of more than tweaking some parsing.
Did you check out the manual -- Zend_OpenId_Consumer basics? Check out 38.2.2 on that page and let me know if this helps, because it should.
Specifically, I don't know if Google offers OpenID. I know that Yahoo worked because I've tried it a while back.
Thanks for the information. I started by using JanRain's library, but I have problems with getting Simple Registration to work: I have not succeeded in getting any data that way. And there is no documentation on using Attribute Exchange. :(
So, I found and was trying Zend/OpenId, but had the same problem as you: no Yahoo!, Google and who knows what else support. Reading this, it seems I'll have to get back to JanRain; RPX is not an option in my case as it's a third party service.
