There are several questions out there to that topic, but not a single one did match my question, because I am using Slim Framework 3.
One of my routes, for example, is /stats
When I make requests to http://localhost/slim-app/public/stats - it works.
But, I want to make requests to http://localhost/slim-app/stats - and that doesn't work. Slim gives me the error
Page Not Found The page you are looking for could not be found. Check

My folder structure looks like that:

The .htaccess- File inside the slim-app folder looks like that:

I have been trying to emulate how nodejs/express work with their routes. I am forwarding all traffic to index.php to process routes (using AltoRouter).
My file struture is something like this:
-/
--public/

--routes/

--index.php
Take these urls for instance (all should return/redirect 404):

However only assets should be directly accessible like so (I dont want to include /public/:

You don't have to bury your files above web root if you use the right rules. Private files can easily be made inaccessible.

I've searched through Web to solve my problem but non of the solutions works for me there, so after couple of hours of struggling with Routing module I've decided to ask you for a helping hand.
Problem
I am unable to access Laravel application from outside /public directory. I need to type localhost\projects\laravel\public in my browser but what I want is to use the URL withour /public. The main reason is because I use shared hosting and have no access to apache configuration file so I'm unable to create vhost.
Background
I've installed manually Laravel framework under the: **c:\xampp\htdocs\projects\laravel** and used composer to do the rest for me.
The routing has been set to: Route::get('/', 'HomeController#showWelcome');
In my project root directory **c:\xampp\htdocs\projects\laravel** I've put a .htacces file with the following content:

Finally I've got this thing working. There are two solutions that can be made.
One requires to move all -public content level-up
Second requires slightly changes in your shared hosting directory root structure - if allowed
Solution #1
The first that works for me that I didn't want to implement has been posted by #Wasim in this thread: Laravel 4 removing public from URL The solution is not save as the content core structure is in the same directory as application itself. This could cause some problems in future implementation.
You need to move all the content from public/ folder one level-up into project ROOT directory then replace internal paths in index.php file for correct onece. For security reasons this .htaccess file needs to be put into project ROOT directory

Modified Laravel structure described above can be uploaded to your shared web hosting and the application should runs withour /public in yor http address.
Solution 2 (with no access to http.conf file on your shared hosting)
This solution does not requires form you to move the content of the /public folder one level-up but requires form you to have read and write access to ../ROOT directory in your shared hosting (../ROOT directory mostly contains public_html, public_ftp and other folders).
You need to move Laravel scructure into ../ROOT directory as follows:
app/
bootstrap/
vendors/
public_html/
public_ftp/
(...)
Files form /public folder goes to public_html
public_html/index.php
public_hmtl/.htaccess
public_html/packages/
(...)
Then modification for /bootstrap/paths.php is required for line with 'public' key:
'public' => DIR.'/../public' to 'public' => DIR.'/../public_html'
If someone has similar issue and this solution does not work please let me know, thanks.
If you want without public on uri, using composer from your laravel root. Use command php artisan serve and browse localhost:8000 from your browser. It will bring you to homepage.
Where did you get this line from?

It's not part of Laravel. Try removing it or the whole .htaccess file in your Laravel root.
how can I show folder name instead of file name?
For example,
www.example.com/home/index.php -> www.example.com/home
I know when I browse www.example.com/home I will get the result but that is not what I want because it will add a / behind the folder name (e.g www.example.com/home/).
What I want is without the / behind the folder and when user browse www.example.com/home/index.php the page will redirect the user to page not found. The purpose I do this is to hide the language I used and make the link more readable and memorable.
I found something like rewrite the rules in .htaccess file but I am new in php so I don't how to make it. Anyone can give me suggestion or provides some tutorial about this.

To remove the slash, you must first disable DirectorySlash

Direct access to PHP files can be answered with a R=404 status code

And then, you can rewrite requests pointing to a directory and containing an index.php
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}/index.php -f
RewriteRule ^.*$ /$0/index.php [L]
This RewriteCond looks, if the requested URL is a directory and if there is an index.php in this directory. If this is the case, then the index.php is executed.
Putting all together

Htaccess doesn't have anything common with PHP. Htaccess is Apache's configuration file, so you need to play with htaccess to achieve that what you want. On the other hand your solution will be really dirty. Learn about MVC and FrontController to make your structure cleaner.
What rule should i set, to make the mod_rewrite ignore the directory "public" completely?
By that, I mean, the files should be accessible within it, but if the file does not exist, a server error page should come up with something like, FORBIDDEN, or FILE NOT FOUND what ever. I do not need custom error pages or stuff like that. I simply want the "public" to behave like there is no mod_rewrite at all.
Here is my .htaccess file:

I've tried all the different answers above (and a ton from google). I've tried to mix 'em up what so ever.

Below are the url with results I'm getting:
/public/favicon.ico -> I get the favicon
/public/faviDon.ico -> I get the index.php (without mod rewrite you would get "not found")
/public/ -> I get the index.php (without mod rewrite "forbidden")
So it still does rewrite urls, if the file was not found, or upon accessing a folder directly.
Can you se it?

This disables rewriting like you wanted.
/public/ -> 403 Forbidden
/public/favicon.ico -> 200 File found
/public/not-existing.ext -> 404 File not found
Do you have a index.php in you public folder?
Maybe you could remove that one..
What kind of machine your testing on?
I tested it on Linux + Apache 2 + PHP5.3

Everything is handled by the .htaccess in the public folder.
Maybe it's a caching problem in your browser. Try a different browser/clean up history/install app to remove cache.. (depending on what browser you're using)
I want to move all my web site files (even including index.php) into a subdirectory (for exp: "abc")

I want everything to work, as it was before, but i don't want to make any redirections (visible).
People should enter "http://myexmaplesite.com/directory/an.other.file/" and by .htaccess apache serve them "http://myexmaplesite.com/abc_directory/directory/an.other.file/" BUT WITHOUT EXTERNAL REDIRECTS (301,302 etc.)

Try this mod_rewrite rule in your document root:
