I am trying to count a specific field in a database that has user details in it. Every user has an id and I want to count the amount of users/ids that are registered in the database. This is my code, how can I solve it? Because it does not echo anything. I am not allowed to use MYSQL to retrieve the count.
include ("databaseconnectie.php");
$query = $db->prepare("
SELECT
COUNT(id) as total
FROM
users");
$query->execute();
$result = $query->fetchAll(PDO::FETCH_ASSOC);
echo $result['total'];`
Due to the way you fetch'ed your data, you will need to add [0] in the $result echo. ($result[0]['total']).
I added in a print_r($result) to show me the array so I could identify where the issue came from and how I can step through the array to get my intended result.
$query = $db->prepare("SELECT COUNT(id) as total FROM users");
$query->execute();
$result = $query->fetchAll(PDO::FETCH_ASSOC);
print_r($result);
echo $result[0]['total'];
EDIT:
As mentioned by #Federkun; you could change this line:
$result = $query->fetchAll(PDO::FETCH_ASSOC);
to:
$result = $query->fetch(PDO::FETCH_ASSOC);
Then you wouldn't need to add the [0] as it is just fetching one result.

I am trying to select a record from my database, and I am return instead the first one in the table. No matter what I try, the first one gets returned.
Here's the query:
$query_task_owner = "select user_id from users where full_name = '$c_task_owner_name'";
$response = #mysqli_query($dbc, $query_task_owner);
Then I try a test to see the value that is returned as such:
echo $response or die(mysql_error());
This is where I see the user_id of the first row.
Even if I try to put a specific value in the query, as follow, I am getting the same result:
$query_task_owner = "select user_id from users where full_name = 'LeBron James'";
I do not understand because when I trying this query directly in PHPMyAdmin, I am getting the right result. So the query itself is correct.
Any idea?
Fetch $response using mysqli_fetch_array().
<?php
$query_task_owner = "select user_id from users where full_name = '$c_task_owner_name'";
$response = #mysqli_query($dbc, $query_task_owner);
$row = mysqli_fetch_array($response,MYSQLI_ASSOC);
echo $row['user_id'];
?>
If, users are more related to that full name. Then, use while loop to fetch all record.
<?php
$query_task_owner = "select user_id from users where full_name = '$c_task_owner_name'";
$response = #mysqli_query($dbc, $query_task_owner);
while($row = mysqli_fetch_array($response,MYSQLI_ASSOC))
{
echo $row['user_id']."<br>";
}
?>
I have a database table that has 4 records with a column _id that auto increments. When I run a query to get all records, it works but it doesn't echo out all the ids, it only points to the first rows and echos it four times. I am using PHP and MySQLi. Here is my code
Code for querying
$sql = "SELECT * FROM att_table";
$query = $conn->query($sql);
$result = $query->fetch_assoc();
Code for display
do{
echo result['_id'];
}while($query->fetch_assoc());
It outputs 1111 instead of 1234. Please what is wrong?
You're fetching each of the 4 results, so it loops the appropriate number of times; but you're only assigning the fetched result to $result once, so that's the only _id value that gets echoed
do{
echo $result['_id'];
}while($result = $query->fetch_assoc())
You also can use a foreach loop :
$sql = "SELECT * FROM att_table";
$query = $conn->query($sql);
$result = $query->fetch_assoc();
foreach($result as $data){
echo $data['_id'];
}
I am trying to count the number of records I have in a certain. This is the SQL query I have been using and I have tried to echo $result, but nothing would print.
$result = $mysqli->query("SELECT COUNT(*) FROM barber_queue ");
echo $result;
I have also tried this code which managed to return something, however not in the format I would like
$result = $mysqli->query("SELECT COUNT(*) FROM barber_queue ");
$row = mysqli_fetch_row($result);
print_r($row);
This returns:Array ( [0] => 6 )
While 6 is the correct amount of rows, I would just like the integer on its own as I want to use this amongst HTML to relay some information back to visitors.
Also this piece of code
$result = $mysqli->query("SELECT COUNT(*) FROM barber_queue ");
print_r($result);
returns on the screen. :
mysqli_result Object ( )
Any Help is appreciated.
I added an alias "num" to the COUNT() keyword, the accessed the $row variable as an array();
$result = $mysqli->query("SELECT COUNT(*) num FROM barber_queue ");
$row = mysqli_fetch_assoc($result);
echo $row['num'];
you are missed mysqli_fetch_row(...);. you are dumping the system mysql_query object, which can not be access by print_r so you have this dump
Was hoping someone could give me some help. I have been trying to learn pagination but have run into an issue. when I run this to get my total rows count:
$sql = "SELECT COUNT (*) FROM item WHERE fid='17'";
$query = mysqli_query($con, $sql);
$row = mysqli_fetch_row($query);
$rows = $row[0];
$rows comes back with no value, I am under the impression that $rows should contain the total number of records from item with the fid of 17, when I run SELECT COUNT (*) FROM item WHERE fid='17' in phpmyadmin it returns 98 which is the correct count. Directly before the above code I use this code to connect to the db, which I use again later to display the records which works fine.
$con=mysqli_connect("$host","$username","$password","$dbname");
// Check connection
if (mysqli_connect_errno())
{
echo "Failed to connect to MySQL: " . mysqli_connect_error();
}
This statement displays records later in the script
$sql = mysqli_query($con,"SELECT * FROM item WHERE fid='17' ORDER BY id DESC $limit ");
So there is data and the info is correct.
I have been following this tutorial on the subject http://www.developphp.com/view.php?tid=1349 and it works like a charm on his example in the video, all I have changed is the database particulars to mine. Can't figure this one out, been stuck for days so now I am bothering you fine folks.
Update: Changed
$query = mysqli_query($con, $sql);
$row = mysqli_fetch_row($query);
$rows = $row[0];
to
if ($result=mysqli_query($con,$sql))
{
// Return the number of rows in result set
$rows=mysqli_num_rows($result);
// Free result set
mysqli_free_result($result);
}
And everything is working now. Still wish I knew what was wrong with my original code but I will be moving on. Thanks Phil Perry for all your help this morning!
Well, you could SELECT * FROM... and then call mysqli_num_rows($query). Probably slower than SELECT count(*). BTW, I presume that item is not a reserved word in SQL. You can always wrap table and field names in backticks (not quotes ' or "). You could also try SELECT count(*) AS myCount....
try this,
$sql = "SELECT COUNT(*) FROM item WHERE fid='17'";
$query = mysqli_query($sql);
$row = mysqli_fetch_array($query);
$rows = $row[0];
I have the following code and it should return just one value (id) from mysql table. The following code doesnt work. How can I output it without creating arrays and all this stuff, just a simple output of one value.
$query = "SELECT id FROM users_entity WHERE username = 'Admin' ";
$result = map_query($query);
echo $result;
I do something like this:
<?php
$data = mysql_fetch_object($result);
echo $data->foo();
?>
You have to do some form of object creation. There's no real way around that.
You can try:
$query = "SELECT id FROM users_entity WHERE username = 'Admin' ";
//$result = map_query($query);
//echo $result;
$result = mysql_query($query); // run the query and get the result object.
if (!$result) { // check for errors.
echo 'Could not run query: ' . mysql_error();
exit;
}
$row = mysql_fetch_row($result); // get the single row.
echo $row['id']; // display the value.
all you have is a resource, you would still have to make it construct a result array if you want the output.
Check out ADO if you want to write less.
Not sure I exactly understood, what you want, but you could just do
$result = mysql_query('SELECT id FROM table WHERE area = "foo" LIMIT 1');
list($data) = mysql_fetch_assoc($result);
if you wish to execute only one row you can do like this.
$query = "SELECT id FROM users_entity WHERE username = 'Admin' ";
$result = mysql_query($query);
$row = mysql_fetch_row($result);
echo $row[0];
there have been many ways as answered above and this is just my simple example. it will echo the first row that have been executed, you can also use another option like limit clause to do the same result as answered by others above.
