password_verify and special characters in password - php

I know this has to be a common question, but I can't find the answer.
I'm using PHP's password_verify. If the password contains "&" it won't verify. Without the "&" it does. What do I need to do to escape the character?

Firstly ignoring that $newstr is not set and you meant $password_entered instead.
It looks like your running htmlentities/htmlspecialchars on the user input, (which you are not showing), so it's breaking it.
The following matches your hash: Password&.

Convert VBA encryption function to PHP

My first question here, so hopefully this all goes well.
I have an application that is currently running on desktop under MS Access using VBA code. When the user logs in I have a function to encrypt the password. This is:

I would not suggest creating your own algorithm for encrypting, instead use built-in functions provided by php.
Although this is not encrypting the password like the one in your original code, using password_hash is easier than creating your own, and to verify use password_verify()

PHP preg_match() steam link validation error

What's wrong with this preg_match() usage? I want to check steam lobby link and if it's matching then write to database. If not, just echo the error. I am doing this through ajax. Is it better to do this with ajax or $_SERVER["REQUEST_METHOD"] == "POST"?

I changed /joinlobby to //joinlobby, and remove the / at the end. I also removed the unnecessary () around everything.
I suspect you also shouldn't have (...)+ around steam?: and //joinlobby/730/. They'll cause repeated uses of those prefixes to be accepted as correct, e.g. steam:steam:...

Code with htmlentities not work properly

I start to learn php and create a code to learn how to use the GET/POST in php code.

The problem is my function txt_check() not working,
but when I put echo htmlentities($fname, ENT_QUOTES, 'UTF-8') #fname=<script> i get <script> at the end of the code.
Maybe I can't edit $_GET? I come from python so I don't know if $_GET is special in someway.
Edit:
I want to understand if i can change the global $_GET\$_POST like I did and if its good to doing so' because i don't know if the code inside txt_check() working for me.
If not, there is a better way to protect the input I get? Because i want to make a standard level of protecting, even if i dont even know the most risks that's hanging out there.
And why htmlentities() its not so good for this case? I use basic tutorial about php security to make it.
If you are trying to remove HTML tags, i would recommend you to use the strip_tags...not the htmlentities.

I am creating a signup form in PHP and need to ensure that user's usernames don't contain unwanted characters. Is there anyway I can create a function that returns true for A-Z a-z 0-9 - . _.
Also I do not want the user's emails to be from yahoo as for some reason they reject the confirmation emails sent. Along with __FILTER_VALIDATE_EMAIL__what would I need to add?
PS: is there anything wrong with the characters I have mentioned above? I have noted that gmail doesn't allow -_ only . and YouTube only alpha-numeric characters.

HTTP-SOVIET and HTTP-PACK?

I found a couple vBulletin sites I administer getting hacked recently. They use the latest version of the 3.8 series (3.8.7 Patch Level 2). I am usually pretty good at finding the holes where they get in and patching them up, but this one is stumping me. They are injecting data into the MySQL tables. The attack always happens when they make a GET request to the faq.php script. I was able to save data when the attack occurs. This was the $_REQUEST, $_GET, $_POST, $_COOKIE, and $_SERVER arrays. The only thing I saw that looked out of place is that there were two new $_SERVER keys, HTTP_SOVIET and HTTP_PACK:

I have to assume this is the root of the issue, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how the attacker can set this variable. There is nothing in the request string, nothing in the cookie array, it is a GET request, not POST.
Any idea?
A variable like $_SERVER['HTTP_*'] can set by just adding headers to the HTTP request.
A simple command line example would be:

Which puts some JS on the page hosted by kjionikey.org. That JS requires a key based on the IP address.
I'd check any code that reads/executes the contents of random $_SERVER variables, but why that would be in there, I don't know.
The attacker in this case has a backdoor code installed in one of your FAQ phrases (vbulletin phrases db table) as a set of chr() PHP function calls.

that basically when eval'd through the faq.php script, gets decoded to:

You may find the affected vBulletin phrases by issuing a SQL query like so
SELECT varname, text FROM `phrase` where text like '%chr(%';
Though there are many variants of this, some are using HEX strings, base64decode, assert, pack calls or just plain PHP.
