$_SESSION is not picking the right value on a form - php

I'm trying to store a $_SESSION variable on a form option for further use on the next page after submit (which will be reloaded and used multiple times after that, so a simple $_POST won't do)
the problem is that it doesn't matter what option I choose, it always saves the value from the last option ("Victoria" in this case) as if I picked that one.
session_start(); is already declared on top of the page
Am I missing something? Here is the form:
<form method="post">
<label for="turno">Turno:</label>
<select name="turno" id="turno">
<option value=DIA>Dia</option>
<option value=NOCHE>Noche</option>
</select>
<label for="planillera">Planillera:</label>
<select name="planillera" id="planillera">
<option value="<?php $_SESSION['planillera'] = 'Rosa'; ?>">Rosa</option>
<option value="<?php $_SESSION['planillera'] = 'Cristina'; ?>" >Cristina</option>
<option value="<?php $_SESSION['planillera'] = 'Maria'; ?>" >Maria</option>
<option value="<?php $_SESSION['planillera'] = 'Romina'; ?>">Romina</option>
<option value="<?php $_SESSION['planillera'] = 'Julieta'; ?>" >Julieta</option>
<option value="<?php $_SESSION['planillera'] = 'Victoria'; ?>" >Victoria</option>
</select>
<input type="submit" id='enviar' value="Registrar viaje" formaction="registrar_viaje.php">
</form>

That's not how $_SESSION or select works.
What you are doing is simply executing PHP where you set value of $_SESSION multiple times - hence why it always assigns the last value.
Your select should look like this:
<select name="planillera" id="planillera">
<option value="Rosa">Rosa</option>
<option value="Cristina">Cristina</option>
<option value="Maria">Maria</option>
<option value="Romina">Romina</option>
<option value="Julieta">Julieta</option>
<option value="Victoria">Victoria</option>
</select>
Then in the inside of registrar_viaje.php you would do:
$_SESSION['plankillera'] = $_POST['planillera'];
Lastly, you would do a redirect to another page.

Get value of drop down menu and save as variable in PHP

I want to get the selected value of a drop down menu and save it as a variable. I tried the following as documented in another post, but it seems not working: echo $selected = $_POST['<?php $as->my_name(); ?>'];
Drop down:
<select name="<?php $as->my_name(); ?>">
<option value="">Select this</option>
<option value="91"<?php $mb->state('91'); ?>>91</option>
<option value="90"<?php $mb->state('90'); ?>>90</option>
<option value="89"<?php $mb->state('89'); ?>>89</option>
<option value="88"<?php $mb->state('88'); ?>>88</option>
<option value="87"<?php $mb->state('87'); ?>>87</option>
<option value="86"<?php $mb->state('86'); ?>>86</option>
<option value="85"<?php $mb->state('85'); ?>>85</option>
<option value="84"<?php $mb->state('84'); ?>>84</option>
<option value="83"<?php $mb->state('83'); ?>>83</option>
<option value="82"<?php $mb->state('82'); ?>>82</option>
</select>
Post the form:
You have to put the select option within form tags
<form method="post">
<select name="example">
<option></option>
</select>
<input type="submit" />
</form>
Get the posted value:
To get the value of this example you can use:
<?php
$selected = $_POST['example'];
echo $selected;
?>
To get the value in your case:
<select name="<?php echo $as->my_name(); ?>">
<option value="test">test</option>
</select>
<?php
$selected = $_POST[$as->my_name()];
echo $selected;
?>

Whats the possibility of one updating a database field with a form having a drop down without changing the value of the drop down field

Lets say i input data into a mysql database using a drop down like:
<div>
<input name="name" type="text" id="name" placeholder="Enter Name"></div>
<div>
<select name="position" id="position" type="text">
<option selected="selected">Select</option>
<option value="A">A</option>
<option value="B">B</option>
<option value="C">C</option>
</select>
</div>
With a normal text field, i can simply include the value field to show on the form the initially entered data in the table. And change that so when i submit form, it updates the related field.
<div>
<select name="position" id="position" type="text" value="<?php echo $row_position['Position']; ?>>
<option selected="selected">Select</option>
<option value="A">A</option>
<option value="B">B</option>
<option value="C">C</option>
</select>
</div>
So assuming i do not want to update the field relating to the drop down, how do i it? Because what happens is, once i submit the form without selecting any option from the drop down, it picks the first option from the list which is the "Select" option and uses that to update the related field in the database.
I'd suggest at least two steps to make it user-friendly and achieve your goals:
First, make the initially entered selection selected if available:
<?php
$positions = Array("A", "B", "C");
?>
<div>
<select name="position" id="position">
<option value="-1">Select</option>
<?php
foreach($positions as $v) {
$selected = ($row_position['Position']===$v) ? "selected" : "";
echo "<option value='$v' $selected>$v</option>";
}
?>
</select>
</div>
And on the receiving php-script check if you've received a valid option, otherwise send error-message:
<?php
//other stuff...
if($_POST['position']>0) {
// save that value
} else {
// send error to user
}
// even more stuff..
?>
Notes: in select tag there is no type=text nor a value=anything available.
Assuming you are fetching dropdown options from database.
Note: Array keys, variables are only for demonstration purposes. This may differ from your actual records.
<div>
<select name="position" id="position">
<?php foreach($options as $option): ?>
<option value="<?= $option['position'] ?>" <?php if($option['position'] == $current_record['position']) { echo "selected"; } ?>> <!-- e.g. $option['id'] -->
<?= $option['name'] ?>
</option>
<? endforeach; ?>
</select>
</div>
What i have done that has solved the issue was to simply add the value from the database to the selectedoption or the first option field. So by default without changing the drop down, the first option with the value from the database is selected. And so there would be no change.
<div>
<div><?php echo $row_position['Position']; ?></div>
<select name="position" id="position">
<option value="<?php echo $row_position['Position']; ?>Select to Change</option>
<option value="A">A</option>
<option value="B">B</option>
<option value="C">C</option>
</select>
</div>
This gives a simple or straight forward solution to the problem.
Will still try the other suggestions to see how it all plays out. Thanks guys.

PHP Form Multiple Inputs

I am having issues with php and form handling. I want to be able to click a dropdown box(like you can do with a form in html, with the different options tags) in php, and allow the selection to take the designated value.
Here is what I have :
<input value="<?php echo isset($results['example']) ? $results['example']: ''; ?>" class="form-control" name="data[example]" placeholder="Example">
That populates with a place you can type in input text, which is accepted perfectly in post, but I do not want the user typing in data, only selecting from options, such as this html form does :
<form action="example.php">
<option value="11">apples</option>
<option value="12">bananas</option>
<option value="13">oranges</option>
</form>
Here is an edit using the data given :
<form>
<select name="example">
<option value="<?php echo isset($results['example']) ? $results['example']: ''; ?>">apples</option>
<option value="<?php echo isset($results['example']) ? $results['example']: ''; ?>">oranges</option>
<option value="<?php echo isset($results['example']) ? $results['example']: ''; ?>">bananas</option>
</select>
</form>
I did not add the action because it will be posted with other data, but did try both ways(with and without action="post.php") and it does not work...
Defining your options inside a select tag
<select>
<option value="11">apples</option>
<option value="12">bananas</option>
<option value="13">oranges</option>
</select>
Should give you in your post the position (value) of the selected item. Then in your php pass value to the selected items *11,12,13 = apples,bananas,oranges**
Hope it help
You need a <select name="name"> </select> around your options
I think you need something like that
<form action="example.php">
<select name="fruit">
<option value="<?php echo isset($results['example']) ? $results['example']: ''; ?>">apples</option>
</select>
</form>
I'd say the issue is not PHP, I think you just need to use the SELECT and OPTION form tags:
You are specifying an INPUT tag, which by definition allows the user to input data.
<form action="example.php">
<select class="form-control" name="data[example]">
<option value="<?php echo isset($results['example']) ? $results['example']: ''; ?>"">
</select>
</form>
So you are looking for a dropdown I guess:
<form action="example.php">
<select name="fruit">
<option value="1">Apple</option>
<option value="2">Banana</option>
<option value="3">Orange</option>
</select>
</form>
On submiting the form you can get the value like: $_POST['fruit'] (in this case).
use type="checkbox", so you can select one more
<input type="checkbox" name="vehicle[]" value="Bike"> I have a bike<br>
<input type="checkbox" name="vehicle[]" value="Car"> I have a car<br>
<input type="checkbox" name="vehicle[]" value="Boat" checked> I have a boat<br>
in php
<?php
$vehicleArray='';
foreach($_POST['vehicle'] as $value) {
$vehicleArray.=$value.',';
}
//output 'Bike,Car,Boat'
?>

How do I Pass Values from One Form to Another?

I have this form:
<form name="summaryform">
<select name="category" id="category" style="width:500px;">
<option value="">Choose category...</option>
<option value="ActionScript">ActionScript</option>
<option value="AppleScript">AppleScript</option>
<option value="Asp">Asp</option>
<option value="BASIC">BASIC</option>
<option value="C">C</option>
<option value="C++">C++</option>
<option value="Clojure">Clojure</option>
<option value="COBOL">COBOL</option>
<option value="ColdFusion">ColdFusion</option>
<option value="Erlang">Erlang</option>
<option value="Fortran">Fortran</option>
<option value="Groovy">Groovy</option>
</select><br>
<select name="subcategory" id="subcategory" style="width:500px;">
<option value="">Choose sub category...</option>
<option value="Haskell">Haskell</option>
<option value="Java">Java</option>
<option value="JavaScript">JavaScript</option>
<option value="Lisp">Lisp</option>
<option value="Perl">Perl</option>
<option value="PHP">PHP</option>
<option value="Python">Python</option>
<option value="Ruby">Ruby</option>
<option value="Scala">Scala</option>
<option value="Scheme">Scheme</option>
</select><br>
<input type="text" name="comments" id="comments" value=" Enter request comments..." onfocus="clearText(this)" onblur="restoreText(this)" style="width:493px;color:#999;font-size:9pt;height:20px;">
On the form above, I have two dropdowns (name="categoryId" and "subcategoryid") and one textboxt (name="comments")
How do I pass the values from this form to another form?
Let's say below is the form I want to pass the values to:
<div>
<p>
<form name="summaryform" method='POST' action='process.php'>
<div style="font-size:12pt;">
value from one dropdown
value from the other dropdown
value from textbox
</form>
</p>
</div>
jQuery Method
If the forms are on the same page, you can use jQuery to get the values and write to the div:
var content = $('#category').val()+'<br>'+$('#subcategory').val()+'<br>'+$('#comments').val();
$('#div-to-write-to').html(content);
PHP Method
If the forms are on different pages, you will need to use PHP and the $_POST[] variable to pass the values you are looking for.
NOTE: for this method to work the page being POSTed to MUST be PHP. You will also need to add an action and method in the first form to POST to the second form.
This would be the code in the form on the page being POSTed to:
<?php echo $_POST['category'].'<br>'.$_POST['subcategory'].'<br>'.$_POST['comments']; ?>
A value can be passed between forms using the POST and GET methods. The first form (Which is sending the values) does not have this defined, so modify the first form to this -
<form name="summaryform" method='POST' action='process.php'>
Then, in process.php, put the following php code -
$dropdown_first = $_POST['category'];
$dropdown_second= $_POST['subcategory'];
$comment = $_POST['comments'];
After that, you can just use the variables as you see fit!
If you want just print the selected values from first form #zsaa14's
answer is good
If you want to print whole select list, autoselected your value, heres a code.
foreach($categories as $category) {
$selected = $category['name'] === $_POST['category'] ? 'selected="selected"' : '';
echo " <option value="{$category['name']}" {$selected}>{$category['name']}</option>" ;
}
NOTE: the variable names and keys are for example, use Yours. This is only fragment of code.
You can use post data fields to send the values to the next form

How to prevent the set of a get variable?

I have a question. Let me explain this with an example.
I have this piece of code:
<form action="vehicles.php" method="get">
<span>Marca:
<select name="brand">
<option value="null" selected="selected"></option>
<option value="Volkswagen">Volkswagen</option>
<option value="Renault">Renault</option>
<option value="Peugeot">Peugeot</option>
<option value="Fiat">Fiat</option>
</select>
</span>
<span>Modelo:
<select name="model">
<option value="null" selected="selected"></option>
<option value="206">206</option>
<option value="Suran">Suran</option>
<option value="Passat">Passat</option>
<option value="Punto">Punto</option>
</select>
</span>
<input type="submit">
</form>
Is any way to prevent the assignment of those variables if the option selected is the "null" one?
If, for example, I select brand="Renault" and model="null" the url is
http://mywebpage.com/vehicles.php?brand=Renault&model=null
but it should be
http://mywebpage.com/vehicles.php?brand=Renault
I know how to unset the variables with "null" value after the form submission with PHP. Is any way to do it before the submission and after the variables are setted to "null".
I would like a cleaner url, free of "variable=null" results.
P/D: I don't have a native english speaking so feel free to edit my question. I wish you understand me.
I am afraid that you might need javascript to achieve what you want.
Take a look at this code:
<form action="vehicles.php" id="carForm" method="GET">
<span>Marca:
<select name="brand" id="brand">
<option value="none" selected>-</option>
<option value="Volkswagen">Volkswagen</option>
<option value="Renault">Renault</option>
<option value="Peugeot">Peugeot</option>
<option value="Fiat">Fiat</option>
</select>
</span>
<span>Modelo:
<select name="model" id="model">
<option value="none" selected="selected">-</option>
<option value="206">206</option>
<option value="Suran">Suran</option>
<option value="Passat">Passat</option>
<option value="Punto">Punto</option>
</select>
</span>
<input type="button" value="Submit" onclick="submitFormFilter();" />
</form>
Javascript : code will be like this:
<script>
function submitFormFilter(){
var myForm = document.getElementById("carForm");
var carBrand = document.getElementById("brand");
var carModel = document.getElementById("model");
if(carBrand.value === "none" || null){
carBrand.parentNode.removeChild(carBrand);
}
if(carModel.value === "none" || null){
carModel.parentNode.removeChild(carModel);
}
myForm.submit();
}
</script>
http://jsfiddle.net/7xzKP/1/
you can it try here.
Include the value attribute of your option tags.
<option value="" selected="selected">-</option>
You should really do this for all of your options.
if you don't want to use $_GET superglobal because of the url extension that it comes with try using $_POST instead. It will not have a url extension and it can still store values that you can later retrieve. Just be sure to change your method to equal POST instead of GET.
So the code for the form tag would change to:
<form action="vehicles.php" method="POST">
And you can later access it by (for example):
echo $_POST['brand'];
or
echo $_POST['model'];
as well, you probably want to add a value param to the values that you have in your option tag.
EDIT-
I've added this new section since you don't want to use POST even though I think you should.
You can stay with the GET method by doing this line of code:
<form action="vehicles.php" method="GET">
<span>Marca:
<select name="brand">
<option value="none" selected>-</option>
<option value="Volkswagen">Volkswagen</option>
<option value="Renault">Renault</option>
<option value="Peugeot">Peugeot</option>
<option value="Fiat">Fiat</option>
</select>
</span>
<span>Modelo:
<select name="model">
<option value="none" selected>-</option>
<option value="206">206</option>
<option value="Suran">Suran</option>
<option value="Passat">Passat</option>
<option value="Punto">Punto</option>
</select>
</span>
<input type="submit">
</form>
Let me know if that helps
You should set the value for the option tag of <select> :)
You's missing set value for option tag. you should set the value for option tag in select tag. With the blank value, you can assign it to a special value like zero(0)
<select name="model">
<option value="0" selected>-</option>
<option value="1">206</option>
<option value="2">Suran</option>
<option value="3">Passat</option>
<option value="4">Punto</option>
</select>
EDIT:
Ok. I got your point. You can import jquery to your page and make a check by javascript before you submit, if the value of select box is blank. you can remove it.
<script src="http://code.jquery.com/jquery-1.9.1.min.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">
$.ready(function(){
$("form").submit(function(){
if($("select[name='model']").val() == "0") $("select[name='model']").remove();
return true;
});
})
</script>
