I dont understand why this is not working and any advice for oop im beginner on oop paradigm
My class

Well, the problem is in the return if, you are using = as comparison operator, where instead you should have used ==, and so the function will return always true... also you should use a static function from the moment that you don't need a object to invoke this function, try with this one:

I'm fetching information from a unofficial API. This API is very large and sometimes doesn't have all elements in it. I'm trying to display values from this API on my site without any errors.
What I've done is check the JSON values like so, to prevent errors:
echo (isset($json['item'])) ? $json['item'] : '';
Works, but it looks very unorganized. I've thought about creating a function to handle safe output, like so:
public function safeoutput($input, $fallback = '') {
if(isset($input)) {
return $input;
}
if(empty($input) || !isset($input)) {
return $fallback;
}
}
and then doing:
echo $engine->safeoutput($json['item'], 'Unavailable');
That unfortuanlly still outputs the Undefined variable error.
I was wondering if there's a better way to handle such information like I showed in the example.
Problem is that the key might not be set, so you would have to check it:
public function safeoutput($input, $key, $fallback = '') {
if(isset($input[$key])) {
return $input;
}
if(empty($input[$key]) || !isset($input[$key])) {
return $fallback;
}
}
Or you can have a shorter version:
public function safeoutput($input, $key, $fallback = '') {
if(array_key_exists($key, $input) && !empty($input[$key])){
return $input[$key];
}
return $fallback;
}
And call the method with the array and the key:
echo $engine->safeoutput($json, 'item', 'Unavailable');

PHP recursive function returns empty JSON object [duplicate]

I have a problem with a recursive function in PHP which returns a JSON object. When the the condition is met to run the function a second time I always get an empty object as result {}. Everything is executed as it would be in the first run, but I always get an empty result.
Here is my code (very much simplified, yet functioning):

There is no place in the whole class, that would return an empty JSON object. Something must be here, that I'm doing wrong or what I'm overseeing.

When you make a return $data, inside a anonymous function, it will not be a run's return.
You are not doing nothing with this return in your autoprocess function.
You need to return something in autoprocess and then return in your if:
if($this->wfProfile->autoprocess){

You need to return your value, for example take this:
function callback($func, $val) {
return call_user_func($func, $val);

this will print empty, but if you do:

At the end I chose the imho less elegant way to solve this, so I used goto instead of calling the function again. This is easy to read and to debug/extend in future. So here we go:

Return an empty but tell php it means `return false`

Is it possible to return an array, but also tell php it's supposed to mean false?
Example:
if ($res = a_function()) {

I guess its not possible, since php will always take an array for return true, right?
Lot's of ways. Probably the preferred one, compare to true with type checking ===:
if(($res = a_function()) === true) {
// all good
}
else {
echo getErrorByNumber($res['err_no']);
}
A non-empty array will always be true:
if($res = a_function() && !is_array($res)) {
// all good
}
else {
echo getErrorByNumber($res['err_no']);
}
Or flip it around:
if(is_array($res)) { //or isset($res['err_no'])
echo getErrorByNumber($res['err_no']);
}

// all good
}
I would solve this problem with a byref parameter:
function foo(&$errors)
{
if (allWentWell())

echo getErrorByNumber($errors['err_no']);

This way you do not have to distinguish between different possible return types and you will not run into type juggling problems. It is also more readable, you know what's inside the $errors variable without documentation. I wrote a small article explaining why mixed-typed return values can be so dangerous.

Maintain Element in PHP Array And Update in PHP Class

I have one PHP class as below (part of the code):

In my webpage says index.php, it calls function doProcess() over and over again. When the function is called, string is passed and stored in an array. In the next call, if let's say same name is passed again, I want to update his age. My problem is I don't know how to check if the array $arrX contains the name. From my own finding, the array seems to be re-initiated (back to zero element) when the code is called. My code never does the update and always go to the array_push part. Hope somebody can give some thoughts on this. Thank you.
There is a ) missing in your else condition of your doProcess() function, it should read:

As I said in comments, it looks like you want to maintain state between requests. You can't use pure PHP to do that, you should use an external storage solution instead. If it's available, try Redis, it has what you need and is quite simple to use. Or, if you're familiar with SQL, you could go with MySQL for example.
On a side note, you should read more about how PHP arrays work.
Instead of array_push, you could have just used self::$arrX[] = ...
Instead of that, you could have used an associative array, e.g. self::$arrX[$det[0]] = $det[1];, that would make lookup much easier (array_key_exists etc.)
Can you try updating the is_val_exists as follows:

Yes. PHP is loosely typed, so any variable can take any type. Function return values are no exception.

Even PHP's built in functions do it sometimes (e.g mysql_connect => boolean | resource link)
It is allowed. However, it is not advisable in the case you gave. For an example where this makes sense, take a look at e.g. strpos() function.
Yes, that's allowed, not like in C, Java, ..., where you have to define the return.
I wonder about this myself, why return something that is different? So the receiving end gets two things to check?
I think I have settled on returning an empty version of the type or an array with a status element myself.
