I am trying to run a LaTeX parser from a dokuwiki website. The LaTeX parser relies on the mimetex cgi module, it is executed from a PhP script using the following command:
shell_exec('/var/www/cgi-bin/mimetex.cgi -f /var/www/html/test1.tex -e /var/www/html/test1.gif');
However, the command is not properly executed when running the PhP script. I ran a test command such as:
shell_exec('cp test1.tex test2.tex');
and was able to check that the file test2.tex was indeed created. I also ran the command:
/var/www/cgi-bin/mimetex.cgi -f /var/www/html/test1.tex -e /var/www/html/test1.gif
from a terminal, and it was executed without error. I also made sure that my apache server is configured so that it can execute cgi scripts following https://www.ionos.com/community/server-cloud-infrastructure/apache/enable-cgi-scripts-on-apache/
I am missing something here... but I don't see what...
You could try to execute the cgi script via a GET request, so it is executed by Apache. A simple way to do this AFAIK:
$response = http_get("http://localhost/cgi-bin/mimetex.cgi");
But you can find other ways also, like using curl.
You will need to pass the tex file as a query parameter, appending it like ?texfile=test1.tex, with proper param name.

I'm trying to run a ROS shell program on the server through php on Ubuntu 14.04. I have tried using system, exec, shell_exec but nothing happens and I don't get any output. The system call is the following:
echo shell_exec("/opt/ros/indigo/bin/rosrun gazebo_ros spawn_model -database Part_A -gazebo -model Part_A");
What are the limitations of using system or exec to run any shell command through php on a server?
I don't care as much about the output of the command as for its execution. I think the problem has to do with the fact that PHP doesn't have any PATH like shell does so it can't find any applications without specifying the exact location. How can I make PHP se the same PATH shell does?
The problem was that the apache user and the environment in which the bash commands are running are not set up correctly. I followed the instructions from this answer but instead of using "source" I used "." and instead of using the source.bash file I used the source.sh file. I also set all the environment variables that had to do with ros or gazebo using the putenv() function.
I need your help here.
I wrote one PERL script for PHP application which needs to be run for every 5 mins.
This script will call PHP program, which will fetch data from MySQL DB and will generate a excel report and will mail those reports to specific users.
Every thing seems to be fine when I ran this script manually with the command (perl reports.pl).
But when I set this Perl in a cron tab, nothing works and reports are not getting generated.
Details: perl script path /opt/app/deweb/web/EDI/Microsoft/reports.pl
this script will call PHP program (/opt/app/deweb/web/EDI/Microsoft/reports.php)
content of script
#!/usr/local/bin/perl
use Net::FTP;
use File::Copy;
use POSIX;
#errorreport = `php /opt/app/deweb/web/EDI/Microsoft/reports.php`;
print "#errorreport\n";
exit;
It is working perfectly when running Manually using command - perl reports.pl
No results, when set in CRON:
*/5 7-19 * * * /usr/local/bin/perl /opt/app/deweb/web/EDI/Microsoft/reports.pl
Please note that this crontab is under super user account named webserv and my login is having access to edit under this super user account.
I'm editing this cron tab using command :: sudo -u webserv crontab -e
I would check the following:
Does it run using sudo -u webserv perl reports.pl? If not, fix the problem for the webserv user (permissions or whatever) and it should work via cron too.
Does which perl using your login give you /usr/local/bin/perl? If not, change the path to Perl in crontab to what you got in which perl to fix the problem.
I found myself to be in the same situtation. After trying to find out the reason, I am almost sure about the reason this happens. Crontab does not have the same environment variables as you when running the script. You must be sure about paths. Try for example run your script like /perl-path /path-to-perl-script/script.pl outside the parent directory of the script and I am almost sure that your programm will not find some files. And as you call one php script from the perl script, it's possible to have the same problem with paths to your php script too.
So the solution is to use absolute paths and no relative.
Also at your perl script don't use php but /full-path-to-php for example:
#errorreport = /usr/bin/php /opt/app/deweb/web/EDI/Microsoft/reports.php;
I have a php webpage located on Webserver1, which is from Host1.
I also have a bash script located in Gameserver1 which is from Host2.
Is there any way to send a command from Webserver1 to Gameserver1 to execute the bash file? The webpage and file are on different VPSs. Both are running Debian 7.
The script is literally one line, to execute a java command via a screen, so the server can start if a player notices it's down. The command's available already so it doesn't need to be a secure way of hiding what the command is.
There are 2 ways I can think of. either create a bash file in Webserver1 that connects through ssh and executes the bash script you need on Gameserver1. then run it through php with exec() command.
Or you can create a php file in Gameserver1 that uses exec() to execute the bash script you need on Gameserver1 and call it using file_get_contents() on Webserver1, which is not that secure since anyone can call that file and run your script.
So I want to execute a bash command from PHP on my web server. I can do this using shell_exec. However, one of the commands I want to execute is curl. I use it to send a .wav file to another server and record its response. But when invoked from PHP, curl doesn't work.
I reduced the error to the following small example. I have a script named php_script.php which contains:
<?php
$ver=shell_exec("curl -F file=#uploads/2013-7-24-17-31-43-29097-flash.wav http://otherserver");
echo $ver
The curious thing is that when I run this php script from command line using php php_script.php, the result I get is
Status: 500 Internal Server Error
Content-type: text/html
However, if I run curl -F file=#uploads/2013-7-24-17-31-43-29097-flash.wav http://otherserver directly, I get the response I was expecting:
verdict = authentic
(Edit:) I should probably mention that if I put some bash code inside the shell_exec argument which does not contain curl, the bash command executes fine. For example, changing the line to $ver = shell_exec("echo hello > world"); puts the word "hello" into the file "world" (provided it exists and is writable). (End edit.)
Something is blocking the execution of curl when it is invoked from PHP. I thought this might be PHP's running in safe mode, but I found no indication of this in php.ini. (Is there a way to test this to make 100% sure?) What's blocking curl and, more importantly, how can I bypass or disable this block?
(And yes, I realize PHP has a curl library. However, I prefer to use commands I can run from the command line as well, for debugging purposes.)
cheers,
Alan
The reason is the administrative privileges when you run the command directly you are running it as root and thus the command gets executed. But, when you run the command through PHP it runs as an user. By, default user has not the privileges to run the shell_exec commands.
You have to change the settings of shell_exec through CPanel/Apache config file. But, it is not recommended to provide the shell_exec access to the user as it help hackers to attack on server and thus, proper care should be taken.
It would be more appropriate to use the curl library provided in PHP.
I am trying to get the path to certain exe's using the where command in the command prompt on windows.
Here is what i did in command prompt.
where g++
where java
where javac
where python
All of these are giving the correct output of the path in the console window which indicated that I have set the environment variables correctly.
But now When i try to run the commands using the shell_exec() function in PHP, only the call to where java and where python gives the correct output. I was even able to successfully execute a respective test file using these commands through PHP.
But strangely, where g++ and where javac give this error in the browser when run through PHP:
INFO: Could not find files for the given pattern(s).
Also if I get the outputs of these two commands on the console and then copy that into my script to compile a c++ or java file, it works perfect. But the where command returns the above INFO when run through the PHP script.
I am running the server on localhost using XAMPP. Any idea what is missing?
