How to calculate minute difference between two date-times in PHP?

The answers above are for older versions of PHP. Use the DateTime class to do any date calculations now that PHP 5.3 is the norm.
Eg.
$start_date = new DateTime('2007-09-01 04:10:58');
$since_start = $start_date->diff(new DateTime('2012-09-11 10:25:00'));
echo $since_start->days.' days total<br>';
echo $since_start->y.' years<br>';
echo $since_start->m.' months<br>';

$since_start is a DateInterval object. Note that the days property is available (because we used the diff method of the DateTime class to generate the DateInterval object).

To get the total number of minutes:
$minutes = $since_start->days * 24 * 60;
$minutes += $since_start->h * 60;
$minutes += $since_start->i;
echo $minutes.' minutes';
This will output:
2645654 minutes
Which is the actual number of minutes that has passed between the two dates. The DateTime class will take daylight saving (depending on timezone) into account where the "old way" won't. Read the manual about Date and Time http://www.php.net/manual/en/book.datetime.php

Subtract the past most one from the future most one and divide by 60.
Times are done in Unix format so they're just a big number showing the number of seconds from January 1, 1970, 00:00:00 GMT

It worked on my programs, i'am using date_diff, you can check date_diff manual on here.

You get results what do you want.

DateTime::diff is cool, but awkward for this sort of calculations that require a single unit result. Manually subtracting the timestamps works better:
$date1 = new DateTime('2020-09-01 01:00:00');
$date2 = new DateTime('2021-09-01 14:00:00');
$diff_mins = abs($date1->getTimestamp() - $date2->getTimestamp()) / 60;

I wrote this function for one my blog site(difference between a past date and server's date). It will give you an output like this
"49 seconds ago", "20 minutes ago", "21 hours ago" and so on
I have used a function that would get me the difference between the date passed and the server's date.

How to calculate minute difference between two date-times in PHP?
The answers above are for older versions of PHP. Use the DateTime class to do any date calculations now that PHP 5.3 is the norm.
Eg.

DateTime::diff is cool, but awkward for this sort of calculations that require a single unit result. Manually subtracting the timestamps works better:

Calculating minutes left in the day

I am trying to calculate how many minutes are left on any given day. I thought I had the soluion but the numbers look a little odd.
My code:

I have a fx that calculate time-diff by days, hours, min, or seconds. Feed in the dates and get the results back. Pos or negative results depending on how you feed it in.

PHP Countdown to Date

How could set a date and get a countdown in PHP? For example if I set the date as 3 December 2PM it would tell me how many days and hours are remaining.
No need for user inputs for the date as it will be hard coded.

You can use the strtotime function to get the time of the date specified, then use time to get the difference.
$date = strtotime("December 3, 2009 2:00 PM");
$remaining = $date - time();
$remaining will be the number of seconds remaining. Then you can divide that number to get the number of days, hours, minutes, etc.
$days_remaining = floor($remaining / 86400);
$hours_remaining = floor(($remaining % 86400) / 3600);
echo "There are $days_remaining days and $hours_remaining hours left";
Let me play around like this:
$rem = strtotime('2012-08-01 14:00:00') - time();
$day = floor($rem / 86400);
$hr = floor(($rem % 86400) / 3600);
$min = floor(($rem % 3600) / 60);
$sec = ($rem % 60);

NOTE: There is no if() test for echo "Remaining...", just coz you wont process this in case when $rem <= 0. Isn't it?
PHP 5.3 allows this:

It's not as trivial as subtracting strtotime() results, since there are daylight savings and time would be mathematically correct, but not physically. Anyway, for these purposes you should use gmdate() function, which has no daylight savings:
$date = gmdate('U', strtotime('2009-12-03 14:00'));
// Get difference between both dates without DST
$diff = $date - gmdate('U');
// Days (in last day it will be zero)
$diff_days = floor($remaining / (24 * 60 * 60));
// Hours (in the last hour will be zero)
$diff_hours = floor($remaining % (24 * 60 * 60) / 3600);
